How to Write Product Descriptions That Convert

A great photo gets the click. A good description is what actually closes the sale — it answers the questions a buyer would otherwise have to message you about.

What every description needs

  • Exact measurements — pit-to-pit, length, waist, inseam as relevant. Sizing runs inconsistently across brands and eras, so buyers rely on real measurements over a size tag alone
  • Material/fabric content — pulled from the tag, not guessed
  • Condition, stated honestly — including any flaws, not just "great condition" as a blanket claim
  • Brand and any relevant era/style context — helpful for buyers searching by specific aesthetic (Y2K, 90s, etc.)

Keywords matter more than you'd think

On search-driven platforms like eBay, the words in your title and description directly affect whether your listing shows up at all. Think about what a buyer would actually type — brand, item type, color, style era — and make sure those words appear naturally in the listing.

Write for skimmers, not readers

Most buyers skim rather than read every word. Short paragraphs, bullet points for measurements, and a clear structure (what it is, condition, measurements, styling notes) outperform a single dense block of text.

The bottom line

A description that answers measurement, material, and condition questions upfront reduces back-and-forth messaging and converts browsers who'd otherwise scroll past to ask questions they can't be bothered to send.
