What to Do With Slow-Moving Inventory: Bundle, Discount, or Donate

A decision framework for dealing with resale inventory that hasn't sold — when to bundle, discount, or cut losses.

What to Do With Slow-Moving Inventory: Bundle, Discount, or Donate

Every reseller ends up with items that just won't move. The question isn't whether this happens — it's what to actually do about it once it does.

First, ask why it hasn't sold

Before discounting, check whether the actual problem is price, photos, description, or genuinely low demand for that item. A price cut won't fix bad photos, and better photos won't fix a genuinely unwanted item.

Bundle for items with real but modest demand

Slow items with some ongoing interest often move better bundled with 2-3 related pieces at a combined discount — buyers perceive more value in a bundle than the same items priced individually, even at a similar total.

Discount on a schedule, not randomly

A predictable markdown schedule (10% at 30 days, 25% at 60 days, clearance at 90) removes the emotional second-guessing of when to cut a price, and signals to repeat browsers that your shop has predictable movement.

Know when to cut losses entirely

Some inventory simply won't sell regardless of price — wrong size run, damaged beyond disclosed condition, or genuinely out of demand. Donating or liquidating in bulk frees up the storage space and mental overhead that holding onto it costs, even at zero or negative return.

The bottom line

Diagnose before you discount, bundle items with modest lingering demand, markdown on a predictable schedule, and don't be afraid to cut losses on genuinely dead inventory — storage space has a real cost too.
